During an inauguration day in the mayor's office, Zohran Mamdani pledged to “reinvent” America's largest city, declaring “a new era” and an ambitious beginning to his administration.

A Historic Figure

The 34-year-old figure, who was a relatively obscure state assemblyman, is the city's first Muslim mayor. He also made history by being the first to be take the oath of office using the Qur'an.

“A opportunity of this kind comes rarely and rarer still is it that the citizens whose hold the levers of change,” Mamdani added.

Ignoring counsel to temper hopes, the mayor was emphatic: “I will do no such thing. The only expectation I seek to reset is that of limited ambitions. Beginning today we will lead boldly and broadly.”

Adhering to Socialist Convictions

Mamdani did not shy away from his political ideology. “I was elected as a democratic socialist and I will govern as one. I will not compromise my convictions for concern of being called radical,” he said to rapturous applause.

The ceremony was a dual event, starting with a late-night oath-taking in a former subway station. He was formally sworn in on the front steps of city hall by Vermont independent senator Bernie Sanders, who spoke of Mamdani's rise as a victory over powerful interests.

An Ambitious Policy Agenda

Mamdani now undertakes one of the most unrelenting jobs in American politics, with a agenda including:

• Subsidized daycare
• Fare-free public buses
• A cap on rents for approximately 1 million households
• A pilot of municipally-operated grocery stores

The estimated $10 billion price tag of these services may pose a hurdle to secure. Mamdani has pledged to increase levies for the richest residents and corporations. However, as a municipality subject to the state government, he will require the backing of Governor Kathy Hochul.

Facing Political Dynamics

The new mayor must contend with apprehension from some members of the Jewish community concerned about his past comments regarding Israel. Tensions were highlighted during the transition when a senior aide stepped down over offensive past tweets.

Mamdani has attempted to ease these tensions by persuading Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to stay on, avoiding the optics of losing a top Jewish official.

On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has called Mamdani a “communist” and warned of withholding government money. Despite this, a prior encounter between the two was reportedly surprisingly friendly.

The Basic Tests of Governing

In the end, New York mayors are evaluated by their ability in providing city upkeep: sanitation, reducing the rat infestation, repairing roadways, and making sure reliable transit operation.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams highlighted his administration's public safety record, pointing to record low numbers of homicides and shootings in 2025, with murders recorded.

As his term begins, Mamdani and his wife will relocate from their Queens apartment to the historic Gracie Mansion. The previous occupant offered a quirky warning about a reputed resident spirit in the home, which allegedly only troubles those who fail to “do right by the city.”

Mamdani ended his speech with a direct declaration: “The work has only just begun.”
