The Tottenham defender found the net twice as Tottenham prolonged their unbeaten run in away games in the top division and handed Everton their first defeat at Hill Dickinson Stadium.

The Toffees were unbeaten in their last five matches at their recently opened stadium at the dockside location, having departed their historic home behind after more than a century at the conclusion of the previous campaign.

But Tottenham's leader the Dutchman pounced twice from set-pieces in the opening 45 minutes to place their strong form at jeopardy, and they were failed to mount a comeback before Pape Matar Sarr - set up by former Toffees attacker Richarlison - headed home a final goal to put the game to bed.

Jake O'Brien believed he had equalized the scores a short while after the defender's opener, directing a powerful header past Guglielmo Vicario from an Everton corner.

The Portuguese striker, in the meantime, missed a number of chances, while Vicario made a series of excellent stops to guarantee the London club went five away games unbeaten in the Premier League.

But the video assistant referee intervened, advising the match official to review the score on the screen and the referee decided that Jack Grealish and Iliman Ndiaye were in offside positions and had impeded with the Spurs keeper.

The win elevates the manager's team into third place in the Premier League, five points off local foes and table-toppers Arsenal.

Everton stay in 14th position and sit half a dozen points clear of the drop zone.

Spurs breakdown: The defender excels in duties at both ends of the field

Following a uninspiring midweek display in the Champions League against Monaco, where they mustered a mere two shots on target, Frank opted for Randal Kolo Muani up front instead of ex-Everton forward the Brazilian.

The new arrival was unable to influence the game before being replaced for Richarlison after 60 minutes on the pitch, but it emerged he wasn't needed in the end.

Centre-back the Dutchman converted into an attacking force to be reckoned with.

Spurs' first goal came from a cleverly executed set-piece play, with the midfielder heading the ball back across the face of goal for an unmarked the defender to score.

And the captain - stepping up as captain in the Argentine's absence - notched his next goal in added time as he outjumped the England keeper to head home.

The Dutchman was equally impressive in defence, partnering well with his defensive colleague as the duo handled superbly with the 34 crosses sent their way by Everton.

Toffees breakdown: Toffees missing finishing touch

Everton's recent stadium had been a fortress, but it appears the novelty may have worn off somewhat and fans headed to the exits after the midfielder's third for Tottenham.

The end in Everton's unbeaten home run won't be a major concern for the manager, but their attacking woes will be.

Beto and the other striker - the Toffees' two established strikers - had scored just one league goal combined before the weekend's match.

And they were failed to contribute to that miserable record on a wet and gloomy night on in Liverpool.

Beto's form was summed up when he chose to overhead kick a clear chance from near the goal, even with having room and opportunity to reposition for a more conventional attempt that would have tested Vicario.

The substitute, as well, was unable to influence the game after replacing the starter in the 65th minute.

It was not for a lack of chance. The majority of the home side's attacks came through Grealish and Ndiaye, who relentlessly whipped dangerous balls into the Spurs box.

The Toffees: Moyes' men travel to Sunderland in the Premier League on early November at 20:00 GMT.
